Venezuela - Chavez Paranoid?
http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/americas/09/11/venezuela.us/index.html
I read an article on CNN.com about Chavez's report to kick out our ambassador and withdraw his from the United States. Bolivia is having political issues with us and Venezuela, its ally, is supporting it. I think that's acceptable, I mean, look at the Georgia issue. We are blindly supporting Georgia against Russia even though they are the aggressors. We've threatened Russia with military force. This is what Venezuela is doing to us. They want us out. We should respect their wishes and pull out for a lot of reasons...
A) It's the decent thing to do. If we are not welcome there, we should not force ourselves to be there.
B) We don't want to add more stress to a situation that's already stressful enough. We do not have the power to go to war with Venezuela (I won't go into details now, that's a whole other issue)
C) It will show the world that we do have compassion for other countries that outweighs our political agenda.
Normally, I don't think I'd be too too worried about the situation. It's fairly calm for now, and Chavez is definitely making himself seem like he's paranoid, whether or not he should be.
However... If you have read my post on BRICs, you'd understand why I'm a little worried, especially since he used the Russian planes as a warning.
In the paper I wrote on BRICS, I said that the military growth of Russia and China was probably just two countries flexing their muscles. It shows us and the rest of the world that they're serious and not to be messed with or taken advantage of. I've even been told that President Lula had Nuclear weapons built in Brazil just to lower his chances of being assaulted by the United States.
However, Chavez just sounded very angry. I don't know the details of this "coup d'etat" (something I'll look into), but he seems legitimately scared for his leadership role. On top of that, Russia is helping them develop nuclear power. I'm not so sure they'll plan on using it, but with that nuclear power comes large and powerful armies. I don't think they'll attack us unprovoked. I'm just not confident that my country won't provoke them. We're not so good at backing off where we don't belong....
All I can say for now, is that I hope the United States will back off and leave Venezuela alone. Doing so may even bring around an amount of respect for our country that we haven't had in a long time.
I do not blame them for defending Bolivia, the United States does the same thing all the time. I don't hold ill will towards Chavez at all. What makes me nervous, is the way he seemed to speak. He was angry, and I worry that he may also turn on his people since he seemed so paranoid about his own past politicians.
