Ukraine, Russia, Kenya, United States? Pirates??
Whadya know? A Russia-Ukraine issue, and... for some reason... the United States?
Apparently pirates are roaming the seas. A Ukrainian ship was carrying Russian tanks today and they were hijacked by... well pirates; and for some reason, the United States was there saying they were worried about high-sea terrorism.
I'm finding this a little too interconnected. Ukraine was one of the ones who, well didn't necessarily support Russia in the Georgia conflict, but they weren't demonizing the country. And the United States is sad that the Russian tanks were hijacked and just happened to be the same area? I know this whole deal is sounding like one big conspiracy there, but there has to be some connections that people just aren't realizing.
But then again, the Kenyan military apparently bought the tanks... from Ukraine?
This has officially become a terrorist issue (Although it may have been to begin with). But I don't think it is... Is the mob a terrorist group? No. Do they steal and manipulate with organized crime? Yes. I wouldn't call this terrorism. Terrorism, I believe, is when a group -or just a person- attacks people to harm them and make a point. They attack people because they want to, or they feel they need to.
9/11: Terrorists. The Taliban had a problem with the United States (What exactly that problem was, I'm not sure) and attacked us to make a point that they wouldn't stand for it (whatever "it" is).
These pirates aren't out to change the world or be political, they just want money. Their thieves. They are simply the "mob of the sea." Don't let yourself fall into the "terrorism" terror that so easily attaches itself to people.
I'm going to look more into this, not necessarily for the pirate issue, but as to why Ukraine was selling Russian tanks to Kenya.

Re: Ukraine, Russia, Kenya, United States? Pirates??
I found an article confirming that the Ukrainian ship was going to Kenya. The weapons were sold under contract to the Kenyan military, but who sold them? Did Russia sell them and Ukraine provided the ship? That seems a little unnecessary since Russia is now sending its own navy to Somalia to fight the pirate activity. So, that would leave that Ukraine was selling Russian military equipment to Kenya? I guess it really isn't that strange to have one country selling another country's product, but military equipment? And why is the United States navy going after the weapons? If the US gets there first and gets the weapons and the crew free, are we just going to give them to Kenya? Or back to Russia? Or even Ukraine? I find it highly unlikely. This whole situation makes me a little nervous about what's going to erupt out of it. We're threatening Russia with missles in Poland. I don't agree with that, but the government and the military does, so why are they trying to get the weapons? Unfortunately... I hope we don't get them.

Pirate Update
The Faina is still being held hostage. It's just anchored of the coast of Hobyo in Somalia. Just sitting there. An article said they were looking for $8 million, but for some reason it jumped up to 20 and so far Ukraine has $1 million of it. How are we not offering money to help? I know we're in debt, but if we can spend billions and billions of money in the middle east, why aren't we giving some help to Ukraine to pay the ransom so Somalian pirates aren't running around with Russian tanks and weapons??
Russia seems to have backed off from the situation. I'm hearing rumors that they want to go to war with the Somalian pirates and want to kill everyone on the ship including the hostages but I highly doubt that's the actual case. What I found it is a little better. Russia is, in a way, declaring war on the Pirates around Africa and is asking countries for their permission to use force on the pirates in the area. They are not, however, talking about the Faina. In fact, the pirates they're talking about are on the other side of the African coastline.
Russia has positioned war ships around the northern coastline (and probably other places) of Africa to defend the trading ports from pirates and hijackings. They are doing this because every other warship that was protecting the area is now isolated at the coast of Somalia which tends to leave the rest of the continent free game. So Russia is picking up that much that's left. I bet they're trying to keep away from the direct conflict because they are already looking at global disdain for the Georgia issue. They may want to lay low without totally neglecting the pirate situation.
