Congo and UN intervening

Post  Admin on Thu Oct 30, 2008 9:18 pm

As most people probably know, the Congo has been having some issues in Africa. A lot of it is supposedly caused by the fact that they have great mining potential. The problem is that the tribes tend to war over who has the rights to mine and sell the minerals.

Currently, a rebel leader, Nkunda, is almost invading the Congo because the government hasn't been treating the Tutsis fairly. He's got an army that's been slowly advancing towards a city named Goma which is the main focus of this post. The UN has peacekeeping soldiers (armed) in the area along with a slew of Congolese government troops. A cease-fire had been agreed on a few days ago, but Nkunda recently broke it.

Newspapers and articles pity the civilians and the UN peacekeepers who are being killed and run out of town by this terrible rebel group of terrorists. However, as I was reading through these articles, something caught my eye. Nkunda said that he had broken the cease-fire not because he wanted to kill anyone, but because the UN soldiers were letting the government troops kill the civilians in the cities. Of course, this contradicts anything the UN or any english article is going to read, so I started looking... and looking... and looking.... and I couldn't find anything else that said anything bad about the UN troops.

The UN troops are not the EU. They are armed soldiers. As the congo military (supported by the UN) retreated from Goma for whatever reason, they killed and looted civilians on the way. The UN soldiers.... did nothing. They did not shoot at the Congolese troops, they did not even berate them. In response, Nkunda began advancing on Goma. He never reached Goma. The UN demanded he stop, and he did. He never got there. Then, throughout the night sporadic gunshots were going off across the city. But Nkunda wasn't there. The Congolese troops were, and the UN soldiers were. The troops were shooting, the UN was doing nothing.

How has this not been addressed yet??? How has the UN not been berated yet?? How is this actually happening and westerners still believe that the UN is doing everything they possibly can and still be ethical? How blind can the populations in the "west" be? The United States government made a website warning people to not go to the Congo because the troops of the republic may kill you.

[...] Congolese troops in parts of the country are known to pillage, carjack, and steal vehicles, kill extra-judicially, rape, kidnap, and carry out military or paramilitary operations.

How is the UN not only supporting them, but allowing them to continue to treat their people like that?

Nkunda, who declared a ceasefire late on Wednesday after his forces advanced almost to the limits of the provincial capital Goma, said U.N. soldiers failed to stop civilians there being killed and robbed overnight by government troops in retreat.

We will go into Goma if there is no ceasefire, no security and no advance in the peace process," he told Reuters by satellite phone. He said he was talking from his headquarters at Kirolirwe, in eastern Congo.

Sporadic gunfire could still be heard Thursday night in Goma, the provincial capital of eastern Congo, but the city was calm for much of the day.

It's ok if your troops are shooting and killing you all night, as long as the keep it down during the day. Don't worry about it, the UN soldiers will totally defend you from the rebels that haven't yet reached your city. Suspect
