Oil Shares (CPC)

Post  Admin on Sat Oct 11, 2008 3:13 pm

The Caspian Pipeline Consortium is an oil company based somewhere between Europe and Russia. I'm not sure what country it's actually located in, or even if there is one base country (Possibly Kazakhstan). The United States has been doing a lot of negotiating with the the CPC to have them build new pipelines through the former soviet republic countries so that they don't need to rely on Russia for their oil (Yet the United States has no qualms about Europe being dependent on Russian energy Rolling Eyes ). The CPC maintains that it's not a political organization and isn't going to become a part of the political drama, and that they aren't even going to be hindered by the politics in the area. In fact, the latest project they were working on was in Georgia. Many people people have said that Russia won't let them finish the pipeline because of the Georgia-Russia conflict, but Russia, Georgia and the CPC all say that it won't be an issue.

I can understand the importance of separating business and politics. You don't want to end up with politicians or even governments so invested in business that they ignore the people. However.... If two countries are at war... I really think there should be some issues with their business transactions Suspect In fact, the idea that Russia and Georgia will continue to business even while at war kinda makes me think that they are so invested in their business transactions, that war won't even stop them. I don't know... It's a fine line...

Anyways... The reason I'm making this post is about the stocks in CPC. The stocks are owned mostly buy governments, and apparently the company likes it like that. They want to keep strong government influence in their company. Maybe it's because if another firm buys stock they may become competition? I don't know. It's a great debate to decide if that really is for the better or for the worst. Oman currently owns what I'd assume to be a good amount of stock. Russia and Kazakhstan are both interested in buying it. I wonder what the United States will say if we get the CPC to do these projects only to find out that Russia's a major stock holder? Irony much?

I don't think Russia's to worried about the independence of the former soviet republics. I mean, they're fighting Georgia to recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
